Raising Readers

Let’s start with priorities! Reading can increase vocabulary, empathy, focus, communication skills, reduce stress, keep kids busy, and much more. Choose one thing reading can do for WHY you want to encourage a love of reading in your home.

Once we know our WHY, we can hack our schedule. We can start by looking for times in our day when we can multitask.

Here are some examples that I have used:
– During Snack Time
– In the Bathroom
– In the Car
– At the doctors
– With Help (FaceTime with family)

If we are honest with ourselves, we can all probably find one thing to give up that’s NOT as important, so that we can get a few extra minutes of reading in. There’s always a little less of a show we could watch or a little less of Facebook we could scroll through. Right?!

We may also have to think about incentives. No, I’m not talking about bribery…well, not exactly. LOL

When thinking about what motivates our children to read, these things come to my mind:

– Age & Reading Level
– Interest
– New Books
– Book Collections or Series
– Praises & Affirmation
– Reading Log or Chart
– Favorite treats

The possibilities are endless! Would love to hear your ideas below in the comments!

The most important motivator, I think, would be finding the right books! Like J.K. Rowling said, “If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.”

So let’s find the BEST books for our kids. The ones that will keep them engaged and that they will remember well into their adult life.

I know how frustrating it can be to spend money on or even borrow books that your children don’t touch, right?!?

So here are some of the things I keep in mind when finding the perfect books: Age, Type of Book, Level, Interest, & Cost.

“If we can find books that our kids want to read and create a craving, our job has just been made way easier!”

When kids are young, their interests seem to be constantly changing. The more books we can provide the better. As kids get older, they start to become more aware of the books that really grab their attention.

So, write down your WHY, hack your schedule, use those incentives, find the best books, and make reading a priority. You got this!

PS. I love helping families find the right books for their kids. Please feel free to contact me for recommendations and check out my favorite books here: c7870.myubam.com You can also keep a fresh stream of books coming with my book boxes. Book boxes create excitement as your child gets their own mail and you explore new books together. PLUS little time on your part finding book entertainment that is engaging and educational.
